Did you know that by the time you finish this page, YouTube will be 500 hours of video richer? Or that in 1 minute over 66,000 photos and videos are posted on Instagram, or that in the second it takes you to read this word, over 9,000 new posts are added to X (calculated from about 500,000 posts posted in 1 minute and 700 million posts in a single day)? Isn’t that fascinating?

And that brings us to the following questions. What to watch? Where to watch? How do we stay in the loop and not drown in the flood of the need to share our opinions and experiences with the world under freedom of speech?

If you’re asking yourself similar questions and this topic affects you (but basically affects anyone who has at least one social media account and regularly browses the internet), then E-TICK, our online course on ethical communication, is for you.

The course provides a variety of materials, exercises, and asks many questions designed to promote media literacy and build a solid understanding of ethical communication today. When we often become the creators and disseminators of news.

In this unequal world, how can we communicate humanely and in a way that will contribute to positive change, especially when we talk about the power structures between the global South and North?

How can we understand a world overwhelmed by images and words without resigning ourselves to critical insight and attention to others?

How to take care of yourself and other users in the online space?

We hope that E-TICK will become a valuable tool for our volunteers, trainers, youth workers and all those passionate about global justice and social change.

What makes the course great?

  • It’s free and accessible to anyone with intermediate English proficiency
  • The course modules can be taken independently at your own pace and pace
  • The total length of the course is just right. Neither boringly superficial and short, nor too burdensome – we estimate 2-4 hours for each of the 4 modules
  • The lessons are interactive! They combine readings, exercises with visuals, videos, quizzes, flashcards and writing your own notes on non-virtual physical paper of your choice
  • Topics are relevant and very topical
  • After you pass all 4 modules, a certificate awaits you

Keywords: ethical communication, media literacy, international volunteering, international development, power structures between the global North and South, culture, social constructs, healthy digital being

Believe it or not, we all enjoyed creating the E-TICK course immensely! It took us a few months and we collaborated on it with Slovenia’s Závod Voluntariat and Družstvo Humanitas, Ireland’s Comhlamh and Italy’s FOCSIV. We hope you enjoy it at least as much as we did!

We are also extremely grateful to the entire test team of 50+ people from all over Europe. Without their feedback and constructive criticism, the course would not be nearly as great as it is today.

Last but not least, we would like to thank the European Union and the ERASMUS+ programme, which financially enabled us to create this course.

And now let’s get on with it.
